Internet Basics: Getting Started with the Internet
Getting Started with the Internet

The Internet is a global network of billions of computers and other electronic devices. With the Internet, it's possible to access almost any information, communicate with anyone else in the world, and much more. You can do all of this on your computer.

To access the Internet, you first need a connection and a web browser.

Connecting to the Internet

A device has to be connected to the Internet before you can access it. If you plan to use the Internet at home, you'll usually need to purchase a connection from an Internet service provider (ISP), which is usually a phone or cable company.

Getting Started with the Internet
  • Wi-Fi: Wireless connection used in homes, libraries, and cafes.
  • Cellular: Internet provided via your mobile phone's network.

Browsing the Web

Most information on the Internet is found on websites. Once you are connected, you access these sites using an application called a web browser.

Browsing the Web

A web browser connects to and displays pages on the Internet. Each website has a unique address. By typing this address into your browser, you can view the content of that site.

Navigating Websites

Websites use links (or hyperlinks) to connect to other pages. These are often blue, underlined, or bold text. Clicking a link tells your browser to load a different page. This network of links is the World Wide Web.

Using Search Engines

When you're looking for specific information, a search engine (like Google) can help. By typing keywords or phrases, the search engine provides a list of websites relevant to your terms.
