Workflow Rule: Every newly created or selected company loads into the Name of Company workspace list. The most recently accessed company automatically becomes the active working company, displayed in bold at the top of the interface.

Creating Multiple Companies

To run multi-firm accounts or manage sister concerns, you can create and maintain multiple discrete company profiles within the same TallyPrime installation.

Step 1: Create the Primary Company (e.g., "ABC")
  1. Launch TallyPrime (Educational Mode or Licensed).
  2. On the startup screen, select Create Company and press Enter.
  3. Enter the company name as ABC and select the State (e.g., Delhi).
  4. Press Ctrl + A to save the basic details immediately.
  5. In the subsequent Company Features (F11) window, set Enable Goods and Services Tax (GST) to No (for basic training purposes) and press Ctrl + A to finalize.
Step 2: Create Additional Companies (e.g., "XYZ" and "STP")
  1. From the Gateway of Tally, click the top Company menu or press Alt + K.
  2. Select Create from the menu list.
  3. Enter XYZ as the Company Name, assign the State (Delhi), and press Ctrl + A.
  4. Set Enable GST to No in the Company Features screen, then press Ctrl + A.
  5. Repeat the exact same sequence to create the third company named STP.
Observation: Under the Name of Company panel, all three companies (ABC, XYZ, STP) are now listed. Notice that STP is active by default because TallyPrime automatically activates the company created or opened most recently.

Switching Between Active Companies

When multiple companies are open simultaneously, you do not need to close and reopen files to enter vouchers in a different company. You can switch between active companies seamlessly using shortcut commands.

How to Switch the Active Company
  1. Press F3 (or click F3: Company on the right action bar).
  2. The Change Company pop-up will display all currently open companies.
  3. Highlight the company you wish to work on (e.g., ABC) and press Enter.
  4. The Gateway of Tally will instantly reload with ABC as the primary active company.
  5. To switch to XYZ, press F3 again, select XYZ, and press Enter.

Shutting (Closing) a Company

When your workspace list becomes cluttered or you are finished working on a specific company, you can shut it down. Shutting an enterprise unloads it from your active memory buffer without deleting any stored records.

Closing an Open Company
  1. Press Ctrl + F3 (or select Company > Shut).
  2. From the list of open companies, highlight the company you want to close (e.g., STP).
  3. Press Enter.
  4. The company is immediately removed from the active screen list.
Important Clarification: Shutting a company (Ctrl + F3) does NOT delete your financial data. The company directory remains safely stored on your hard drive and can be reloaded at any time.

Selecting (Reopening) a Shut Company

To bring a closed or existing company back into your active working session, use the Select Company command.

How to Load a Company from Storage
  1. Press Alt + F3 (or navigate to Company > Select).
  2. The complete repository of all companies stored in your data directory will appear.
  3. Select the desired company (e.g., STP) and press Enter.
  4. The company will reopen and reappear in your active workspace list.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does shutting a company with Ctrl + F3 delete its transactions?

No. Shutting simply closes the company from your current working session to free up system memory and declutter the interface. All ledger entries, vouchers, and settings remain permanently stored on your drive.

Which company is active by default when multiple companies are open?

TallyPrime automatically sets the most recently opened or created company as the active one. The active company's name is emphasized at the top left of the Gateway of Tally.

What is the key difference between F3 and Alt + F3?

F3 (Change Company) switches between companies that are already open in your current session. Alt + F3 (Select Company) searches your data directory to load a closed or inactive company into memory.

Can I maintain different feature settings (like GST) across multiple companies?

Yes. Every company has its own independent configuration. Modifying features (F11) in one company (e.g., turning GST off) will not affect the statutory or accounting settings of any other company.
