Shapes can make slides more engaging and easier to understand. PowerPoint offers a wide range of shapes you can customize with colors, styles, and effects to match your presentation’s design.
Inserting a Shape
- Go to the Insert tab.
- Click Shapes in the Illustrations group.
- Choose the shape you want.
- Click and drag on the slide to draw it.
Modifying Shapes
When a shape is selected, handles appear:
- Sizing handles resize the shape. Corner handles change height and width together.
- Rotation handle turns the shape.
- Yellow handles adjust special features, like points or curves.
You can also align, order, and group shapes for better slide layout.
Formatting Shapes
Change Shape Style
- Select the shape.
- On the Format tab, open Shape Styles.
- Pick a preset style with built-in colors and effects.
Change Fill Color
- Select the shape.
- Click Shape Fill on the Format tab.
- Choose a color, gradient, or texture. Select No Fill for transparency.
Change Outline
- Select the shape.
- Click Shape Outline.
- Pick a color, change thickness, or use dashed lines.
Add Effects
- Select the shape.
- Click Shape Effects and choose shadow, glow, or other styles.
- Use Options for more control in the Format Shape pane.
Changing the Shape Type
- Select the shape.
- Click Edit Shape > Change Shape.
- Pick a new shape to replace it.
Adding Text to Shapes
Click inside the shape and start typing. Use the Home tab to adjust font, size, or text color.
Shapes give you creative control to make your slides visually clear and appealing. By combining styles, colors, and effects, you can create presentations that stand out while staying easy to read.
