Windows 10 is the latest version of Microsoft Windows. Many versions of Windows have been released over the years. Some older versions include Windows 8 (2012), Windows 7 (2009), Windows Vista (2006), and Windows XP (2001). Earlier versions mainly worked on desktop and laptop computers. Windows 10 is designed to work well on tablets too.

What is an Operating System?

An operating system (OS) controls all hardware and software on a computer. Without it, a computer would not work. To learn more, check out Understanding Operating Systems in the Computer Basics tutorial.

How is Windows 10 Different?

Many users found Windows 8 confusing and hard to use. Windows 10 is easier and feels more like older versions. However, it also has new features and improvements.

New Features in Windows 10

Start Menu
Windows 8 had a Start screen for opening apps. Windows 10 brings back a traditional Start menu. It is larger and makes it easier to find apps.

Microsoft Edge
This is a new web browser that replaces Internet Explorer. It is faster, safer, and has more features. You can still use other browsers if you prefer.

Cortana
Cortana is a virtual assistant like Siri or Google Assistant. You can talk to it using a microphone. It can answer questions, set reminders, and perform tasks.

Multiple Desktops and Task View
Windows 10 allows you to use multiple desktops. You can move some windows to another desktop to stay organized. Task View helps manage open windows easily.

Action Center
The Action Center is improved in Windows 10. It shows notifications and gives quick access to settings like Wi-Fi and tablet mode.

Tablet Mode

Windows 10 works better on tablets than Windows 8. It has separate desktop and tablet modes. If you use a keyboard and mouse, desktop mode is the default. If your device has a touchscreen, you can switch to tablet mode anytime.

Should You Upgrade?

Windows 10 is faster, safer, and more similar to older versions than Windows 8. Microsoft will support it for many years. If your computer runs Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 and meets the system requirements, you can upgrade by purchasing Windows 10. Upgrading is a good choice if your system supports it.
